Understanding BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple ratio of weight to height. While it is not a perfect measure of health—as it does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass—it remains a standard clinical screening tool used by the CDC and WHO.

BMI Range Category Clinical Significance
Below 18.5 Underweight Potential nutritional deficiency or underlying condition.
18.5 – 24.9 Normal Weight Lowest statistical risk for cardiovascular disease.
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight Elevated risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes.
30.0 and above Obese Significantly higher risk of metabolic syndrome.
